When I dragged the "junk-mail" folder to the IMAP account header, I got an
error message stating something like "folder already exists".
When I checked the folder configuration via web browser (using Alpine
2.01.1272), it showed that the folder existed in two places: at top level
for my IMAP account, and also within my "Sent Items" folder.
I used Alpine to delete the "junk-mail" folder in "Sent Items". Then I
restarted Entourage. The "junk-mail" folder was not visible anywhere. I
control-clicked on my IMAP account header in the folder list, and selected
"Receive Complete Folder List" in the popup menu. The missing folder did
not appear in the folder list (the list on the left side of the Entourage
main window). But it did show in the list of folders (the list on the right
side of the Entourage main window, when the account header is highlighted).
The missing folder displayed in black, indicating it was unsubscribed. I
control-clicked on the missing folder, selected "Subscribe" in the popup
menu, and this restored the folder in the subscribed folder list (the list
on the left of the window).
What a mess. I've seen this situation before. It is very easy to click on
a folder, twitch your finger, and unintentially change the folder's position
in the hierarchy. Users with motion regulation disabilities (e.g.,
Parkinson's) might run into this a lot. The process for restoring the
correct position is not obvious or easily discoverable, and is too
complicated.
My suggestion to the Entourage/Outlook team is that the action of moving a
folder should be made more resistant to accidental error. If a simple drag
moves the folder, post a confirmation dialog ("Do you really want to move
this folder?"). Or require a key-click combination (command-click, etc.) to
move the folder. I'm forwarding this suggestion to the feedback channel.
