Diane,

I know you are not a fan of the 2wire 2701HG-B Gateway but the
appended note from 2wire was helpful. It confirms what you were
saying that you can add the preferred DNS IP numbers to the Network
Preference pane and bypass the auto lookup. That¹s what I am doing
and it does seem to help cut down on the nagging Entourage errors
about finding the DNS.

The only problem with using the namebench utility is it gives you
a better solution each time you run it. I ran it and changed a few times
and finally settled on

204.117.214.10 ns1.sprintlink.net
68.94.156.1 dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
192.168.1.254 gateway.2wire.net (this was the default before the change)

That seem to work best from my location.

Thanks for the tip to add the DNS to the System Preference/Network/
Advanced/DNS

So far good luck and success with the 2wire gateway. It works better than
the D-Link I had before. Something tells me the life of a modem is
about one year no matter what brand.

Yes. You can definitely change the DNS servers your HomePortal is using. I'm
not sure if it will help the Entourage issue but it is pretty easy to change
the DNS back if it doesn't. You can also change the DNS settings in your Mac
directly. This will basically bypass the 2Wire HomePortal and query the DNS
server directly.

To change the DNS servers on the 2Wire gateway please follow these steps:

1. Open a browser and go to "gateway.2wire.net" (without quotation marks)
2. Click on the Broadband Link tab
3. Select the "advanced settings" link
4. Select the option "manually configure your DNS information" and add the
DNS servers you would like to use
5. Click save and the settings should now be updated
6. If you have any trouble with the new DNS information you can always
select the "obtain DNS information automatically" option to revert back to
the defaults.
