Hello List,

Here is my situation:

Powerbook G4, 10.4.11, 2GB, 1.67, Always Latest Updates
Entourage 11.4.0 - All Accounts (Mobile Me, GMAIL) are POP.
Office 2004 (Student Edition, I think), Latest Updates

I've been using Entourage for Email Only.
Its Address Book syncs fine to my Mobile Me, except for Groups -- only
individual Email Addresses sync.

All my email is POP.

For my PIM I've been using Palm Treo 700p™ & Palm Desktop 4.2.2 with regular
HotSync...

I AM BUYING MACBOOK PRO SOON, AND IPHONE 4.

I need to move all Entourage and PIM/Palm Desktop data from Powerbook G4 to
that MacBook Pro. Then, in order to use iPhone 4, I want to switch from
Entourage to Apple's Mail.... Plus, Entourage is going away anyway... So, I
want to switch to Apple Mail, which would be the most supported "mainstream"
way of Syncing with iPhone

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

MY PLAN IS:

Migration Assistant
Powerbook G4, 10.4.11 in Target Mode
Bring my Office 2004, and Palm Desktop along with the rest of my User
Folder, and some apps to new MacBook Pro.

PLEASE TELL ME WHICH OF THESE IS A BETTER METHOD FOR:

Merge Palm Desktop/Treo 700p Address Book with Entourage Addresses. Then
Convert/Import Entourage into Mail.

Transfer my Calendar, Tasks into Mobile Me.

The biggest concern, besides Merging my Palm Desktop/Treo Addresses is
transferring my Palm Desktop/Treo Memos into iPhone 4/Mobile Me.

METHOD 1 - Missing Sync & Migration Assistant
http://www.markspace.com/iphone/mac/

Install Missing Sync on my New MacBook Pro, and sync my Treo to it. My 2,600
Palm Memos will somehow be handled by:

Sync Notes
Transfer and sync notes and memos between Fliq Notes and Entourage, Yojimbo
and Mark/Space Notebook.³

At the same time, assuming that Missing Sync & Migration Assistant with all
my Palm Memos becoming iPhone Fliq Notes goes smoothly, I am somewhat
concerned again about having my Memos/Notes TRAPPED yet in another 3 Party
Application... Yes, I understand that Mark/Space Notebook. + Missing Sync
are more Feature Rich than the generic iTunes Sync for iPhone, but being
TRAPPED like that gives me a concern, particularly with iPad on the horizon,
and trying to keep most of my iOS Data in Sync between iPhone and iPad....

METHOD 2 - Entourage Conduits & HotSync

This Method will bring the entire Palm Desktop/Treo 700p PIM Data into
Entourage, but then, I still need to Transfer my Memos (now Entourage Notes)
with Mobile Me..., and, even though I see Notes as one of the items in my
10.4.11 .Mac Preferences, I was told that by Notes .Mac means not Memos
(that I just brought from Palm Desktop/Treo), but rather "Other>Notes" Tab
in Entourage Individual Addresses!

METHOD 3 - PhoneView
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/faq.html

is temporary not available:

Q: Does PhoneView work with iOS 4?

A: Yes. Be sure you're using the latest version of PhoneView. Notes
add/edit/delete, Call Log delete, Message delete and Camera Roll delete are
not available for iOS 4 devices.

PhoneView was my "Insurance" for transferring my Palm Desktop Memos, after
they were Converted into Separate Tex Files into iPhone Notes Application,
and Syncing those Notes to Notes in Apple Mail...

METHOD 4 - on my Powerbook G4, Manually Select All my Contacts in Palm
Desktop and Drag them into a Folder on Desktop. That would turn each Contact
into CONTACT.vcf file. Then Select those CONTACT.vcf files, and Drop them
into Entourage Address Book. Doing it that way will Assure me that it's REAL
MERGE or both Palm Desktop and Entourage Contacts. Obviously, I'll backup my
Entourage Contacts by Exporting them 1st, so that, in case that Merge
doesn't work, I can Restore my Entourage Addresses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

After I am Syncing iPhone OK with my Apple Mail IMAP on the New MacBook Pro,
I want to:

Switch my Powerbook G4, 10.4.11, Entourage to IMAP, so that all my email is
ALMOST identical on my both laptops, or

Disable my Entourage Schedules, and thus "Freeze it" as an Archive of sorts,
or and

Upgrade my Powerbook G4 to Leopard, 10.5.8, and copy my Apple Mail from
MacBook Pro to Powerbook G4, so that my Apple Mail is identical on both
Laptops...

Remember, that, in addition to Mobile Me, I'll have a couple of Gmail
Accounts that I'd like to convert from POP to IMAP!

I must confess that I've never dealt with IMAP, so I am a bit nervous about
this big change. I understand that IMAP is best for multiple Macs, and
keeping all of them in Sync with Mobile me.

Is there a way of having IMAP also download All my Mail to my Laptops, the
way my POP has been doing for years? If not, how am I to Read and Compose
Emails on my laptops when I don't have Internet Access? I would feel always
safer, if I have All My Emails also on my own Hard Drives, as a Backup!

My Entourage Database is 4.95GB, does switching from POP to IMAP mean that
my entire Entourage Database of 4.95GB will be Copied back to Mobile Me, and
will then be Downloaded onto iPhone 4, taking up 4.95GB of space out of my
32GB?

In case all this got too confusing:

I want ALL my Entourage POP Email become Apple Mail IMAP on both laptops,
and thus be IDENTICAL, and I want it to Sync with my iPhone, but maybe not
have All of it on iPhone, let's say just 2010 and on...

I want ALL my Entourage POP Email remain POP as Read Only Archive on on both
laptops, no Send Schedules...

Upgrading my Powerbook G4 to Leopard, 10.5.8, will narrow the gap between
these 2 laptops, which I plan to Network with File Sharing:

AIRPORT

I am presently using Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station M8799LL/A 802.11b/g
http://bit.ly/aDGMzi

I want to create a WiFi Network between these 2 Laptops... 802.11b/g would
work on both, I assume, but it will slow down my MacBook Pro, right?

I'll also mention this:

I've been Cloning my Powerbook G4 for years using SuperDuper! I will
continue to do that, and will have a separate SuperDuper Cloning on my
MacBook Pro, with the addition of Time Machine!

Again to Summarize, MY BIGGEST GOAL is:

Palm Desktop PIM transfer to iPhone, Merging Entourage Addresses with it.
Syncing my former to be Palm Desktop Memos between Mac and iPhone!

Identical Apple Email IMAP on both laptops
Identical Entourage POP Archive on both laptops

I hope all that stuff is not considered too OFF TOPIC:)!!!

I don't know how all of you on Entourage are planning to sync your iPhones
to your Macs, since Entourage is going away! I am simply trying to minimize
the number of 3rd Party Apps, and keep it as much Apple Native as possible,
in hope of having better Support, given Apple Stores!

Maybe some of you need more Customization, more Pro Features that MSFT is
going to provide with Outlook as part of Entourage Replacement in the next
version of Office!!! However slick that product is going to be, it's still
not Apple + Apple, and thus 3rd Party, which means being told at Apple
Store -- ask Microsoft or a List like this!!!:):)!!!

Even these days, Apple Store folks are not too eager to help me with this,
cause most of them hardly know Entourage, never mind Missing Sync, or Palm
Desktop...

I just re-subscribed to this List, cause I remembered how good and
experienced its readership was a while back! I don't know how many of those
people are still here, and how many moved on to Apple Mail, like I am trying
to do...

The difference in my case is that I got stock in Tiger 10.4.11, and never
switched from Palm Desktop to Entourage all together, as I should have years
ago... Reason: Entourage was Slower than Palm Desktop, and less stable! So
now, I am stuck with about 2,600 Palm Desktop Memos, that I MUST transfer to
iPhone!!!!

Thanks in advance for any and all help!
