I rarely delete messages immediately after reading. I will read a folder of messages then delete all or I will use the "unread only" view for that folder. I use the space bar to read messages.
Here are the shortcuts. From feedback we get Entourage and Outlook do things backwards from user expectations. In 3 pane view you can just use the space bar to go to the next message. In preferences you can select how long before a message is marked as read.
