Islamic school bans national anthem December 05, 2008 Article from: The Australian AN Islamic school in Brisbane has banned the playing of the national anthem. The Australian International Islamic College in the suburb of Durack ruled that Advance Australia Fair was against the Islamic view and ethos, Sky News reports. A teacher who requested the playing of the anthem claims he was sacked after requesting the anthem be played. The college is accused of promoting segregation after a memo was sent in July announced the singing of the anthem will be put on hold. The school has denied the anthem has been banned at assembly and says the students sing it at functions on every occasion. It is not compulsory for schools to play the national anthem. AAP
