TEMPO Interactive, Tanjungpinang:The impact of the global economic crisis has
affected Batam island. Bintan Industrial Estate General Manager said layoffs
continue to take place in a number of companies. Out of 15.000 workers in 38
companies, there are only 10.000 people still working at 21 companies.

The work terminations are caused by the economic slowdown in Europe and the US.
Demands for goods have declined by 50 percent. As a result, two companies in
Bintan are also expected to be shut down in the near future. Around 1,000
workers are certain to lose their jobs.

Riau Archipelago governor, Drs H Ismeth Abdullah, called on the area managers
to monitor the companies so that laid off workers are not neglected.
