I haven't used that Vendor driver myself for a while (my older machine
which serves as AP died of old age, unrelated), but I did remember it
was a bit funny in that you need to make the AP end do something
(anything) before a client can connect, otherwise the AP is invisible
to clients. So what you did (change it to managed, then back to AP) is
quite consistent to what my experience is; but I found a better
solution: the simpliest thing to do is to run "iwlist scan" on the AP
after the AP interface is configured.
