Sophistry was given a bad name by Plato.  The Sophists were his arch-rivals.  
They were skilled in rhetoric, especially persuasive speech which targeted 
emotions.  He won, so now we worship logic.  (But still find that rhetoric is 
just as powerful today as it was then.)
