Joe, I thought the same too, as Winter (Jan 1) 'splits' the years into an artifical/illusionary timeline of our life. The antidote for that, of course, being the boundless tree ring you mentioned. But then I thought that "spits" gives the impression of a weary bitterness towards that relentless march of time that imprisons those that still regard time as linear (That erroneous view being, for me, reminiscent of Dylan Thomas' call to rage against the dying of the light). I too, am interested to hear what Tim originally meant in his earlier post.
