joe did i not send this to you before?
as you say practise so with art... start observing..look at the simplicity of
all things..and note they are all very basic shapes..check the writings of paul
cezanne...check the writings of kandinsky..father of abstract art...check
mondrian.... check paul klee... some of my all time favorite artists...but
start to day..and observe... start with a cup and saucer..
 practise
 and observe
you will only find your own way through practise...that is the zen way and it
applies to all we do
enjoy art making and have fun

Merle, lovely paintings. And gorgeous website for them. Kudos!

Beginning painter here, as you know (at the stage of concentrating on realism,
even if scenes are from imagination, or just technical exercises, to get
familiar with the tools). Nothing abstract, nor of eidetic imagery, yet, but
these may come. I think I'm at the start of a long and variegated relationship
with painting.

Funny how taking part oneself in an activity makes the statements or
accomplishments of others along those lines so very interesting, and in new and
strong ways. Nowadays, I even look at the paintings I see in ads (adverts) and
STUDY them: the brushstrokes, colors, balance and composition. This may tickle
your heart, as an art teacher for over thirty years, I think you wrote. ;-)

Painting is a good Yoga.

A little experience just draws me in deeper and opens me outward.
