OK; REMEMBER: look WEST to see the earth's shadow before sunrise;

Look EAST to see the earth's shadow after sunset.

Does that still work out, Merle, for your horizon clearances?

Always, always, look OPPOSITE the direction from the Sun.

And the sun must be BELOW the horizon, so the shadow goes up into the air a few 
degrees.

(just summarizing).  ;-)

PS  The shadow stretches from N to S along the horizon opposite the sun, and 
the shadow reaches HIGHEST (and easiest to see) at the point just opposite the 
sun.
