The remarkable experience of Zen Buddhism is that it gets rid
of itself in the process of getting rid of sentient beings*. Zen
Buddhism is a launching platform that becomes problematic if
clung to.
And Enlightened Zen Masters are impossible to institutionalize
because their minds are wall-less, without ceiling, without floor,
and have no moving parts.
When Enlightened Zen Masters die their teachings fall into the
lore and rituals of Buddhism. Only non-Buddhists practice zazen.
Buddhists rehearse being Buddhists.
Theravada is the bone. Mahayana is the flesh. Zen is the spirit
that keeps the corpus alive.
