If you are a Martian and have been waiting to be ready for prime time, this
might be your time, whether you are ready or not.

Just show yourself, whether fossil, or microbe, or molecule, and you may make a
big splash in the news on Earth in a few months. Provided all the instruments
come on-line well.

Commissioning will be slow and deliberate, colleagues say.

But sampling of the atmosphere can begin very soon. If methane is found, it
may indicate a living source (because without a constant re-supply, methane is
broken down quickly in Mars' thin atmosphere by UV light, and disappears:
there's no "ozone-layer" above Mars to protect chemical bonds). Mars'
atmosphere is over a hundred times thinner than earth's. Once, early on, it
may have been a lot thicker.

Enthusiasm for "space" spilling over into "emptiness", here. And vice versa.
;-)
