Bill!, Merle,

I read ISLAND in my twenties, about two years after I had begun studying
Hinduism and practicing Yoga intensively. It made a big impression, and was
fun. It was "nice" to encounter so many of the Hindu ideas and figures in the
book, like old friends, but in a new and unexpected setting. I was already
well familiar with Huxley through his DOORS..., and a few other things,
especially THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY, which is non-fiction (mostly). ;-)

It would be fun to pick up THE ISLAND again; a big used book store is three
blocks from me (but the house is already unduly loaded with books; it's past
time I sold some of them BACK). I'll keep it in the back of my mind to pick up
a copy. Used books can be had for one or two dollars. Of course, there are
libraries.
