Merle, Suresh, et al.,

Life and Death are poles of a duality.  Each, about 12-feet long!

In Zen literature, Life and Death are often referred to collectively, or as 
ONE, as "The Great Matter".

When monks or nuns of the past, or other practitioners, were working on Zen 
practice, they would sometimes say that they are "working on The Great Matter", 
or "studying the Great Matter."

It's a nice way to put it, I think.

It certainly encompasses everything.
