I saw this on another forum I frequent and I wanted to share it here.  I don't 
know who the author of this quote is but I think it's right on point...

"We often lose gratitude for the world around us. By practicing mindfulness we 
are able to touch the sounds around us, for example.  We hear the sounds of the 
city, voices of those around us, doors opening and closing, phones ringing, the 
wind, nature, etc.  --  Hearing is just one sense, but it is one that floors 
our brain all day.  We rarely take time to appreciate our ability to hear, and 
the sound that fill our ears.  Listening to the noises that surround us is an 
extremely useful tool in mindfulness practice.  We begin to notice simple
