Rosy, There is no such thing as a 'Zen chaplain'. There are zen teachers, and some of these are Buddhists and do us a variety of titles. In Japanese Zen Buddhism the title of a teacher is 'roshi'.
In order to become a teacher in the case of Japanese Zen Buddhism you must receive 'permission to teach' (called 'inca' in Japanese) from a teacher who himself/herself has received 'inca' from their teacher.
