Merle,

You can meditate in any position while doing any activity.  The reason Zen 
Buddhism teaches you to meditate first while sitting is to minimize all 
distractions.  Once you've been able to do that you can do what my whole 
practice is now - bring your meditation (realizing  Buddha Nature) up off the 
cushion and integrate it more and more seamlessly into every facet of your 
daily life.
