Merle,

They're both real experiences, of course; and, they relate to each other.

The difference among them is that, in one, we are more awake.

Via Zen practice, and through Zen awakening, we are maximally awake.

The Buddha awoke, and when asked about what was different with him then, he is 
known to have said:

"I am Awake".

"Buddha" just means "awake".

Are you a Buddha?  ;-)
