Aha!, so you didn't mean separate areas away from their main colony's entrance 
/ exit.

I know that, underground, their tunnel system is very varied and specialized.

But usually, in the Animal kingdom, a "midden" is a food hoard, not a 
graveyard, or a landfill.

Maybe Merle is right, then, that ants don't eat their dead, but bring them 
"home" for some other purpose(s) which have some value to their survival.  E. 
O. Wilson may have some writings on this.
