The story goes that we are all enlightened but most of us just don't realize it yet. That's what the term 'awakening' refers to: waking up to the fact that we are all Buddha - all enlightened. Anyway if you disagree with the quote you'll have to take it up with Shunryu Suzuki. It's his quote, not mine.
