Hello,
I have been lurking for a while, and now I decided to
post.
First of all, I wish to introduce myself: I am
Brazilian, I live in Sao Paulo, and I am going to a
zen temple since June.
I wish to ask you about something: when a naive
believer sees a statue of Kannon, for instance, he or
she thinks of it as a real spiritual entity or
something like that. When a skeptic sees the same
statue, he or she thinks that it is only a wooden
statue.
What do you think? Should we behave as naive
believers, as skeptics or something in between? I
think my question has to do with dealing with
"esoteric" concepts in Zen Buddhism, like karma,
bodhisattvas, hungry ghosts etc.
Please excuse me for my not so good English!
Best regards,
Bruno
