In Florida the cookies have a high price because they all want to fly away
in a hurricane.

Hi everyone, We just got our power back after 9 very long hot days. We
were at the exact point where hurricane Frances made landfall. Usually a
hurricane will blow through in just a few hours. This one stalled and hung
around for 30 LONG hours. The winds started on Friday night and steadily
picked up until they were at their maximum of 110mph between 9-12 on Sat.
night. Then the eye passed over us for five hours and it became very quiet.
At 5am the extreme wind started up again and decreased until about 3 in the
afternoon.

We had storm panels over our windows and the house didn't even shake but the
sound was endless and we really didn't know what to expect. At one point I
thought that if I suspended 'self' I could experience the storm. I had
never been through a hurricane before and I was curious. This feeling of
curiosity didn't last long though. It was replaced by SHEAR TERROR! We had
no damage to the house but we had a lot of damage to my gardens. Oh well,
life IS change and I can plant again.

One wonderful experience of the power being out was that we met many
neighbors. Without power, TV, computers or lights, people would wonder out
into their yards and actually talk to each other. It was great, we met
about 50 people. We also helped each other out. One of the cashiers at the
grocery store had no phones and she wanted to let her family know she was
OK. I told her we had phones and I would call her mother. When we got home
I called her mom and said that I was just letting her know that her daughter
was OK, she didn't have a phone and she didn't want her to worry. The lady
was so sweet, she started to cry with relief and then she cried because she
thought I was so sweet to call her. Then I started crying because she was
so sweet.

The storm brought out the best in people and the worst in people. Our
neighbor 'borrowed' our gas tank from our grill without asking......other
wise known as looting. We did get it back which was a good thing because I
had a freezer full of thawed food to cook.

We got into a daily routine of taking cold showers, working to clean out the
damaged brush from the yard and going to sit on line to get ice from the
National Guard.

I have heard so many people say that God is trying to tell us something or
that the hurricane was the work of the devil. The wind is the wind and that
is all. The one thing that amazes me is that the day after the storm the
insects and animals were still OK. How can they have sat huddled up in 110
mph winds! We have a resident toad that catches flies every night while we
sit on the patio in the light. The light attracts bugs and this bring the
toad over for dinner. He will sit within two feet of our chairs. One night
he fell into the pool and made noise until we rescued him. I think he knows
we are 'safe'. The night after the storm he was back like nothing had
happened.

Life is getting back to normal again. I must admit I will never take air
conditioning, hot showers or ice cubes for granted ever again.

JODY
