I think responsibility is the right word. Obligation may not be, especially if one 
thinks 
of it as something imposed from the outside.

Classically speaking, however, we are naturally obliged to save other beings because 
we have attained enlightenment because of them, so we owe them. All our virtues 
depend on others.

How could we develop patience if not for those who bugged the shit out of us?
How could we practice generosity if there were none to give to?
Etc.

So I think basically we agree. We rejoice in our ability to respond (respond+ability).
