The Only Way To Become Intimate With All The Teachings Of Soto Zen Is To Enter
The Culture. If Your Intrest In Soto Zen Goes Beyond Idle Curiosity I Would
Recommend You Stop By A Sangha And Dip Your Toe In The Culture. I Think It Is
The Only Way To Put The End To These Questions And Give You A Whole New Set
That Will Actually Change How You Are In The World,

Dear Genryu,

This is not to question your tradition or anything, it??s just that I am
interested in learning a
few things:

In the previous message, you wrote, ??Practice is not some special method or
activity that
takes place outside of daily life but is inclusive of all we do in daily life
and just sitting is
not concerned with any theme, even purity. There is also just walking, just
eating, just
seeing - practice emphasizes the just part, not the sitting part alone.??

1) Since practice emphasizes the ??just?? part as well, and there are also
all kinds of other
??just?? activities like ??just walking?? and ??just seeing??, why is that in
Soto Zen there is an
emphasis on ??just sitting?? in its practice and not on other forms of ??just??
activities like
??just standing???

2) I once heard a quote, ??the practice of zazen is enlightenment.?? Is
this consistent with
Soto teachings?

3) There are other schools of Buddhism which teaches meditation on the
theme of
compassion, would this be considered inappropriate by your tradition?

4) Does Soto Zen use the Koans? Is so, how is Koan used?

Thanks,
Garleon
