A tangent! I warn you!
UNDERSTANDING YOUR PATTERNS N' SUCH.
Alot of people have the misconception that once you
understand your vices they magically disappear. The
way it works is, your understanding disarms them,
strips them of their importance, and allows you to
start ignoring them constructively.
The "moments of clarity" they talk about in pop
psychology & AA meetings, and the instantaneous
enlightenment you read about in some Buddhist
texts--they ain't miraculous transformations. They
are breakthroughs that permanently shift your outlook,
and inspire you to change your path.
The brain functions mostly on habits and familiar
patterns. Changing these takes time, constant
vigilance, and a firm ground to stand on. These
breakthroughs and "instant enlightenmentings" are the
firm grounds and foundations to further Enlightenment.
I've heard people debate instant vs. gradual
enlightenment in many circles. I believe one can't
exist without the other.
