Zen is a branch of Buddhism, stemming from the teachings of the
Shakyamuni Buddha. The Buddha practiced a revolutionary way of
teaching, known as the Buddha's silence.

What that silence means is that any time the Buddha was approached by
the interlocutor who wanted to know whether the universe has a
beginning or not, whether it has an end or not, etc., the Buddha would
remain silent.

Thus the Buddha refused to be drawn into any metaphysical polemic.
