NeutralMilk and all Sangha, In the Genjo Koan, Dogen Zenji says:
To study the Buddha Way is to study the self To study the self is to forget the self To forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand dharmas. To be enlightened by the ten thousand dharmas is to free ones body and mind and those of others. In light of the recent discussion here, the word "forget" stood out. It doesn't say to "destroy" or "eradicate" the self. Interesting. Why? Is there a difference? "To forget the self" is to turn away from mind's preoccupation with self and see what else there is.
