I enjoyed the story very much.  Thanks.

Although, as you said, it isn't a Buddhist story.  It's more like a 
Christian or a Western moralistic story with the recognition of the 
distinct dualism of Good and Evil.

A zen addition to the end of this story would be the old Cheyenne 
continuing by saying something like: "...But the best course is to 
starve both of them!"
