Ideally, folks should never cease their resolve to rid
themselves of their negative habits.  An Enlightened
being does not need to rely on annual landmarks for
such things.

However, most of us are not wholly Enlightened beings.
 If the beginning of the year serves as an effective
spring-board for an individual's spiritual leaps and
bounds, there's no reason why they should stop.  They
should just be mindful of the fact that one day, they
may come to a point in their lives where New Years'
Resolutions are no longer necessary.

What's important is that one does not get attached to
the ritual for its own sake.
