I see what you're doing there. You have a NAT router in front of your Zen loadbalancer. Zen still only handles requests within the subnet that the request is made, even though we're able to mix public and private subnets.
I've actually got IP addresses that work in both private and public IP spaces on our Zen box, and that's where the confusion arose. That, plus the fact that Zen actually does act as a proxy, meaning that if it has both public and private IP addresses, I can't see much reason why it can't forward requests between those address spaces. But apparently it doesn't.
