I looked into it, and I'm getting a different error than you are:

RuntimeError: wrong/unknown XML-RPC type 'nil'

After a little bit of research, I was amazed to see that Ruby's XML- RPC library is non stable and there is a great deal of ongoing debate as to how code on it should progress. I will update the wiki page with a warning note and to use Ruby's XML-RPC only if you are are up to date with the active development of Ruby's standard library.

I tried this from perl to make sure this is not a rubyism. i had the same result.

Did you try it from python? The example on the wiki for python definitely works.

python xmlrpclib, on the other hand, has been stable for years. Enjoy!
