you don't need to install new mibs to your device in order to model them using 
snmp from zenoss.
zenoss come with a base template to model a unix-like machine. it will work 
with your debian installation.
what you need to do is get your feet wet, try to add a device and setup the 
snmp params and let zenoss model it, it is pretty easy.
as for v1 vs. v2 of snmp, I don't really see what the big deal is. you should 
not enable snmp read-write, just read-only and you can restrict it to a range 
of IPs or a subnet. you can edit the snmp settings for v2 so that zenoss can 
walk the tree or you could switch it to v1, up to you. I personally use snmp v1 
read-only from my subnet, my snmpd.conf typically looks like this:
sysLocation MyDC
sysContact  I ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
rocommunity public 10.0.0.0/8
