back up your /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
and put this in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
rocommunity public x.x.x.x (x.x.x.x being your zenoss box)
restart snmpd and do a recollect on the device
If your not getting alot from snmp on nix boxes, its more than likely
because your snmp conf has restrictions of what it shows
Cheers

Yes I have SNMP enabled and I have a non-standard community. I can
successfully talk to the linux box - it just don't get any useful
information.
I've been looking through snmpd.conf - should I be modifying this file
to enable monitoring?

Try adding a linux machine just like you did the windows boxes.

My debian boxes worked almost out of the box.
