If you're having problems with Zenoss not sending alert emails, please check 
your hosts file first!

I've been running a Zenoss system on CentOS 4.4 since last year, without any 
problems, but yesterday I installed another app to test on the same server, and 
had to alter the hosts file, to remove the hostname and FQDN of the server from 
the hosts file... Ever since then I have experienced similar problems that 
other people have had i.e. No email alerts being sent (eventhough they are in 
the appearing to be sent in the zenactions log) but email tests do actually 
work.

So, try that first, it might just work.
