Another difference is that we don't have DataCollector command
plugins that run over SSH to collect information from every platform
under the Sun out there. So far we're pretty good about linux boxes,
darwin boxes, and we can even get some Solaris 8/9 information using
SSH.
So if you're in a position (ahem Solaris 8/9) where SNMP is not an
option (because the configuration is just too difficult to get
working) you could try using the command plugins. They are tucked
away in $ZENHOME/Products/DataCollectors/plugins/zenoss/cmd.

Well zenoss is primary created for snmp, so it takes little bit of
extra work to get everything looking the same under ssh as it does
under snmp. By using ssh you're securing data in transit but if
your zenoss box gets compromised they have ssh access to all your
machines. With SNMP your data will be in clear text but at least
the most people can do (provided you only setup read access) is
read the data themselves off the server and nothing else. Its
really a case which is the bigger evil and usability.
