Zenoss doesn't need the nagios plugins to function, or even to create the default set of performance graphs. You can definitely use the nagios-plugins from ports. Just go into the zProperties for /Devices in Zenoss and set the zCommandPath to where these live.
I just symlinked the plugins into the $ZENHOME/libexev directory. You also have to disable them in the build GNUmakefile so you don't get the error while installing.
