I have set up print counters for three models of printers in our
organization. The intention is to graph and report on print volumes. I
have one printer model which graphs perfectly, two others however have
very erratic graphs, spiking for each print job. I have been learning
about the round robin database (RRD) creation, but I can't identify why
there seems to be a difference in behavior.

Here are the specifics:
Zenoss 1.1.2 (upgraded from 1.1.1)
Centos 4.3

        pageCount Data Point:
        Name: pageCount
        Type: Derive
        Line Type:
        RPN:
        RRD Min:
        RRD Max:
        Limit: -1
        Color:
        Format: %5.2lf%s
        Create Cmd:

I started off using the Guage Data Source type, and then changed to the
Counter, but upon reading the description of the "Counter vs. Derive"
note at http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdcreate.en.html I decided
that Derive might be a better choice for testing this.

Now, if I manually grab the page counts via snmpget I get the following
results:

        1178209872
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 259855
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 39264
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 228403
        1178211317
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 259857
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 39267
        SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.43.10.2.1.4.1.1 = Counter32: 228403

However if I read what has been recorded in the RRD files for these data
points, I get different results. The one that works report as I would
expect:

        [EMAIL PROTECTED] Devices]$ rrdtool fetch
        printer-4/pageCount_pageCount.rrd AVERAGE --start 1178209872
        --end 1178211317                            ds0

        1178210100: 2.5985500000e+05
        1178210400: 2.5985560876e+05
        1178210700: 2.5985700000e+05
        1178211000: 2.5985700000e+05
        1178211300: 2.5985700000e+05
        1178211600: 2.5985700000e+05

However, the two that do not work properly report like this:

        [EMAIL PROTECTED] Devices]$ rrdtool fetch
        Xerox_6D/pageCount_pageCount.rrd AVERAGE --start 1178209872
        --end 1178211317
                                    ds0

        1178209920: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210040: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210160: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210280: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210400: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210520: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210640: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210760: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178210880: 1.9450007581e-02
        1178211000: 5.5499924194e-03
        1178211120: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178211240: 0.0000000000e+00
        1178211360: 0.0000000000e+00

The one factor that I have not mentioned yet, is that the one that is
working properly was configured to the the Derive data source from the
start. The other two I had configured as Guage and Counter before
choosing Derive. Each time I made a change, I deleted the existing RRD
file, so that it would be created with the new Data Source Type
(although i can't find any log that tells me what type of data source
was used to create the file.)
