This is perhaps best described as a feature request, unless anyone can tell me
how to do it now (or in the upcoming v2 release).
I'd like to be able to monitor "applications". Zenoss currently can monitor
"Systems", but applications are finer grained. For instance, I'd like to tie together a
device, 2 ip services on that device, one ethernet interface on that device, two ethernet ports on
another switch, a MySQL service on another device, and a couple of router ports. All together,
these components describe the parts of an application. I'd like to see events concerning any
components that are part of the application (since they effect the delivery of the application to
my customers). I'd also like to be able to receive a single alert that tells me something is wrong
with the application (rather than a slew of alerts telling me about all the individual pieces).
To make it easier to manage, I imagine the ability to "package" a set of components and
use it like a class that can be extended for a specific application. For instance, I have a bunch
of applications whose web interfaces reside on the same device. Connectivity to that device is
provided through a set of switch and router ports. I don't want to have to add each of the ports to
each application definition separately. I'd rather create an application "class" that
contains all the ports and devices common to all the applications on that device, then create a
specific application that extends the class and simply add the IP service that's specific to the
application.
I agree that the ability to group together components in much the same
way devices can be grouped together would be very useful. It would
probably be most helpful in alerting rules.
