i followed the examples on the docs and made a nicely formated graph legend example. thought i would share it with everyone because it took a little while to figure out. Assuming you have three datapoints (ds1_time,ds2_time,ds3_time) and you want to see them in one graph and be able to tell them apart this is the code you would put in your "custom" field when editing the graph, just replace your datapoint names for the ds1_time,ds2_time,...
