I was going to suggest you look at this thread:

but I'm not sure that's relevant. What does $ZENHOME/bin/python -V say?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ /usr/local/zenoss/bin/python -V
Python 2.4.4
I ran zendisc run by hand from the cli and got more of the same ping
errors. Not being able to ping is keeping me from being able to model
the rest of the network it seems even though it can now discover a route
out (my machines defaultroute).
Zenoss builds an internal network-topology map for several of its functions.
It is recommended that you first run "zendisc run --routers" so that, for one
thing, zenping will be happy from the beginning. If you don't, you'll get thousands
of "Network xxxx not in topology" in your logs. (Don't forget to rotate the logs :)
I changed my snmpd.conf to contain just rocommunity and my string. I can
now get routes and disks other things out which display on the OS page.
Still no performance data though. Not sure why.
