I finally got zenoss removed with the following command:
rpm -e --nopreun zenoss
plus manually deleting what it left behind.

I reinstalled it and it now works. The only difference with this install is 
that I started it with /etc/init.d/zenoss start, whereas the last time I 1st 
querried it with "service zenoss status" and it automatically went into it 
initialization steps.
