Though the Zenoss documentation is better than some of the other packages I've looked at, I'm having a hard time finding a clear answer to some questions. Can you help?

I need to monitor about 500 HP ML350 servers which are all on different networks and behind firewalls. The firewall configurations can't be altered. Is there a way to push the reports from my customers' servers to Zenoss?

In Zenoss the means of monitoring systems is client-less, so they are actively polled by the monitoring server itself (via SSH/SNMP/Nagios plugins) as you've read. This removes the option of agent-push-driven alerts/updates (ala Hyperic), unless you/someone writes a passive monitoring plugin (ala Nagios NRPE).

In response to the "could I make it work?" thought that would be inevitable for me...

There "seems" to be some support for remote monitoring systems, splitting off performance/availability monitoring into remote systems... that you could "potentially" place at the remote sites to do this job, and "maybe" get reporting back to the primary host. Sorry for the sarcasm, but I haven't seen that anyone has successfully achieved this since (at least) 1.x versions, and even though docs indicate this is somehow possible, and there are options in Zenoss for it... it seems non-functional to me. Maybe just "right now" and will be fixed, maybe until you buy the enterprise product.

All of the servers have either the SmartArray 641 or E200i raid controllers. Can I monitor the status of the drives?

If the above terms are tenable, I'd first check for a Nagios plugin for this, or whether there is support in the vendor's enterprise MIB for these.

Thanks!
