The step in the instructions (#15 in mine) that created the mysql-init file did 
not appear to set the sql password.  I manually set the password and tested 
using the following steps, then reinstalled Zenoss and it completed.

You must change the root MySQL password from blank.
mysqladmin -u root password YoUrNeWpAsWoRd

Now test the password.
mysql -u root -p

It will ask for the new password.
YoUrNeWpAsWoRd[/i]
