Two excellent replies; thanks very much to both of you. Deleting the RRD database solved the update time problem. The contents of $ZENHOME/log/zenperfsnmp.log showed a problem with opening the databases themselves which had been created by root and did not have sufficient zenoss permissions. I had not picked up on the problem when I ran zenperfsnmp manually as I was running it as root. Changing the permissions and ownerships did the trick.
I agree that zenoss isn't really cut out for real time monitoring and that something lighter weight might be better. In particular I haven't worked out if there is a way to make the graphs update themselves properly if anyone can enlighten me? Does anyone have any suggestions for other software out there that might be more appropriate?
