I have about 60+ execs running on different servers, and I have found that rrdtool at times changes the scale, I have not figured out the reason for it to do this. I also have string resp come back since I am using exec, and usually this works just fine. (rrd guesses what it is supposed to be float/ int / etc).
You might want to disable the threshold and graph out the results and see if the scale is being changed. If so use the math function to change it back.
