Sorry if this should have been discoverable. I've been kicking around the
wiki, quick start, and admin doc for Zenoss 2.1.1 for a day and haven't had any
luck.

I have installed the VMware appliance version of the Zenoss 2.1.1 release.
And, we have a heterogenous network of about 30 devices across 3 states and
about 5 locations. Most are Windows based, but some are Linux and some are
dedicated devices like Linksys and Cisco routers.

I can't use SNMP on most of the devices due to security concerns, so I want to
start simple with monitoring IP ports across the inventory for service
availability on the authorized ports and also monitor that unauthorized ports
are not opened.

Any tips or pointers on getting successful with the least amount of pain would
be appreciated.

The specific task I can't see how to accomplish is how to get devices into the
Zenoss monitoring cloud. As an example, I'd love to tell Zenoss to
periodically scan *all* of the IP addresses in the 66.220.31.192/27 range and
add a device for any IP address with any active TCP or UDP listeners.

If that's too difficult or just not possible, what's the easiest way to create
a device entry for each of the IP addresses and then periodically scan these
devices for open ports?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I'll keep looking around, and I'll
capture whatever comes out of this as a HOWTO for the wiki.
