You shouldn't need to go changing loads of permissions.

Here's what I do for installing on SLES:

As root

1. Download, compile and install Python 2.4.4 using defaults.

2. Install swig-1.3.29-9.i586.rpm

3. Install MySQL & start

4. Create Zenoss user

5.Switch to Zenoss user (su - zenoss)

6. Untar zenoss tarball & switch to zenoss directory

7. run ./install.sh

8. As root, change two permissions as indicated at end of installation

9. As user zenoss, start zenoss
