The admin guide goes over a lot. The info on the site about HTTPMonitor does more. On POP3/FTP, you could do port monitoring out of the box, or you could look for a plugin (maybe Nagios plugin?) to do more than see if the port is open.

There isn't currently (to my knowledge) a howto on specifically the three things together.
