I can't give you a firm answer here, because I use the virtual appliance, not the RPM of source. I have done so in the past but I never had to back it up or anything like that.
I know that configuration is held in ZOPE, which is a database, and events are held in MySQL, also a database. I would think both would need to be backed up. When you installed Zenoss, it probably used a "Blank" MySQL password, where now you may have one set. There may be a config file somewhere where you have to set this for zenbackup to run, or maybe the user you run it as needs to have permissions to do whatever it needs to do. It's probably something really simple. As far as an upgrade, I would think its just an RPM?
